Country Code: AE

The ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code for the United Arab Emirates. Every UAE IBAN begins with AE.

Check Digits: 2 digits

Positions three and four are decimal check digits calculated using the same MOD-97 algorithm used by all IBAN-issuing countries. They confirm the IBAN has not been transcribed with an error.

Bank Code: 3 digits

The next three digits identify the bank holding the account. The UAE Central Bank assigns these codes. Common UAE bank codes include:

When Did UAE Adopt IBANs?

The UAE Central Bank issued its IBAN directive in 2011 and required all banks to implement it for both domestic and international transfers. The transition was completed by May 2011. Before the IBAN system, UAE banks used their own proprietary account number formats, which caused difficulties in cross-border payments, especially within the Arab world and with European banking partners.

The UAE's adoption of IBAN was part of a broader Middle Eastern banking modernization effort. Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan, and other Gulf states adopted IBANs around the same period.

IBAN vs SWIFT in UAE Transfers

Two identifiers are commonly used in UAE international transfers:

• IBAN, identifies the specific account at the specific bank in the UAE. Required for all transfers into UAE accounts.
• SWIFT/BIC code, identifies the bank itself in the global SWIFT network. Required for international wire transfers so the correspondent bank knows where to route the funds.

Common UAE IBAN Mistakes

Missing Leading Zeros in Account Number

The account number section must be exactly 16 digits. If your bank account number is shorter, it must be zero-padded on the left. Dropping these zeros produces a 22 or 21 character IBAN instead of the required 23, which any validator will immediately reject.

Wrong Bank Code

Confusing Emirates NBD (026) with Emirates Islamic Bank or ENBD subsidiaries is a common error. Always verify the 3-digit code with the actual receiving bank.

Using a Local Account Number Without IBAN Format

Some UAE bank correspondence still lists the raw account number without IBAN formatting. Before transferring internationally, always ask the recipient to provide the full 23-character IBAN, not the local account number.
