A Santander UK IBANis the 22-character code used to receive international payments into a Santander UK plc account. Like every British IBAN it is built from a sort code and account number, but it carries Santander's own four-letter bank code, ABBY — a legacy of Abbey National, which Santander acquired and rebranded in 2010. This guide explains the exact format, the BIC/SWIFT code, how to find or construct your Santander IBAN, and how to validate it.

What does a Santander UK IBAN look like?

A Santander UK IBAN is always 22 characters and follows the standard British structure:

GB kk ABBY ssssss cccccccc
  • GB — country code (United Kingdom)
  • kk — two check digits (MOD-97)
  • ABBY — Santander UK's bank code (the first four letters of its BIC)
  • ssssss — your 6-digit sort code
  • cccccccc — your 8-digit account number

Example (illustrative, not a real account): GB05 ABBY 0900 0912 3456 78. Here ABBY is the bank code, 090009 is the sort code, and 12345678 is the account number.

What is the Santander UK BIC / SWIFT code?

The main BIC for Santander UK plc is ABBYGB2L (or ABBYGB2LXXX in its 11-character form). This is the head-office BIC in London and is the code most senders need for an inbound SWIFT or SEPA-style payment.

One honest caveat worth understanding: Santander, like most large UK banks, also has branch-specific BICs tied to particular sort-code ranges — for example, ABBYGB3Eis associated with certain Financial Markets sort codes. These branch BICs route to the same institution. For everyday transfers the head-office BIC (ABBYGB2L) is the correct and widely accepted choice; branch-level codes only matter for specific corporate or treasury flows. When we identify a Santander IBAN we return the institution-level BIC (ABBYGB2L); branch-precise mapping requires the UK's licensed sort-code reference data.

Which sort codes belong to Santander UK?

Santander UK accounts mostly sit in the 09-xx-xx sort-code range inherited from Abbey National. A few real examples published in public bank directories are 09-00-09 (London), 09-00-95 (London), 09-07-05 (Merseyside) and 09-04-03 (Glasgow). Your own sort code is printed on your debit card, statements, and inside online banking. The sort code is what ultimately routes a domestic payment to the right Santander branch.

How do I find my Santander UK IBAN?

The quickest and most reliable way is to read it directly from your bank:

  • Log in to Santander Online Banking or the mobile app.
  • Open the account and look under Account details or Share details.
  • Your IBAN and BIC are displayed there in full — copy them exactly.

If you only have your sort code and account number, you can construct the IBAN yourself: prepend GB, add the bank code ABBY, append the 6-digit sort code (no dashes) and the 8-digit account number, then calculate the two MOD-97 check digits. Our free Sort Code to IBAN converter does this in one step.

How do I check that a Santander IBAN is correct?

Paste it into our IBAN checker. It confirms the IBAN passes the MOD-97 checksum, verifies the 22-character structure, identifies the bank as Santander UK plc from the ABBY code, returns the BIC, and shows the sort code and account number broken out in the anatomy view. Validation runs entirely in your browser session — no IBAN is ever stored.

A valid IBAN means the number is well-formed and routes to a real institution. It does not confirm that the specific account exists or who owns it — only the receiving bank (or a Verification of Payee check) can do that.

Is a Santander UK IBAN usable for SEPA payments?

The United Kingdom left SEPA on 31 December 2020 after Brexit, so UK IBANs are no longer guaranteed SEPA-eligible across the eurozone. Euro payments into a Santander UK account generally travel over the SWIFT network and may incur correspondent-bank fees, though many modern payment providers still process them smoothly. For domestic GBP payments, the sort code and account number — not the IBAN — remain the standard.
