IBAN Countries List 2026: Every Country That Uses the IBAN Standard

The IBAN standard (ISO 13616) is used by 92 countries as of 2026. Every country on this list has an official IBAN format registered with the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT), which maintains the ISO 13616 registry. This page lists all 92 countries, grouped by region, with their two-letter country code and IBAN length.

Does the United States Use IBAN?

No. The United States does not use the IBAN standard. US bank accounts are identified by a 9-digit ABA routing number and an account number. When sending money to the US, you need the recipient's routing number and account number, not an IBAN. Similarly, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan, India, and most of Asia and Latin America do not use IBANs.

If you receive an "IBAN" that starts with US, it is not valid, the US has no ISO 13616 country code assignment.

What is SEPA and Which IBAN Countries Are Members?

SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) is a payment integration initiative that enables euro-denominated transfers at uniform cost and speed across member countries. All 27 EU member states are SEPA members, plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland, Monaco, San Marino, Andorra, and the Vatican City, 36 members in total.

SEPA uses IBANs as the mandatory account identifier. Within the SEPA zone, no BIC is required for transfers (since 2016). Outside the SEPA zone, a BIC/SWIFT code is typically still needed alongside the IBAN.

How Often Is This List Updated?

The ISO 13616 registry is maintained by SWIFT and updated when new countries formally adopt the IBAN standard. New adoptions are infrequent, typically one or two countries per year. The last major additions came from Sub-Saharan Africa and Central America. This list reflects the registry as of 2026.

Countries sometimes announce IBAN adoption before it becomes active in the SWIFT registry. Only countries with a formally registered IBAN format (published by SWIFT) are included here.
