The Moldovan IBAN is a 24-character code used by all licensed banks in the Republic of Moldova. Moldova adopted the IBAN format to facilitate cross-border payments with EU and Eastern European partners. The MD BBAN contains a 2-letter bank code followed by an 18-character alphanumeric account identifier, giving it a structure similar to Georgia's but with a longer account field.

Moldovan IBAN Structure Explained

A Moldovan IBAN encodes four components within its 24-character body:

1. Country Code, MD (2 characters)

The ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code for Moldova. Every Moldovan IBAN begins with MD.

2. Check Digits, kk (2 characters)

Two characters calculated via the MOD-97 algorithm over the full BBAN. Moldovan IBAN check digits may include letters as well as digits because the BBAN is alphanumeric and the MOD-97 calculation can yield letter-containing results, though in practice most Moldovan IBANs have numeric check digits.

3. Bank Code, bb (2 uppercase letters)

A 2-character alphabetic code identifying the bank, assigned by the National Bank of Moldova (Banca Națională a Moldovei). Common Moldovan bank codes:

  • AG, maib (Moldova-Agroindbank)
  • ML, Moldindconbank
  • VI, Victoriabank (Banca Transilvania Group)
  • MO, OTP Bank Moldova (formerly Mobiasbancă)
  • EX, Eximbank (Intesa Sanpaolo Group)
  • PR, ProCredit Bank Moldova

4. Account Number, cccccccccccccccccc (18 characters)

An 18-character alphanumeric account identifier. The account number may contain uppercase letters and digits. The 18-character width reflects Moldova's domestic account numbering conventions, which encode currency, branch, and account type information within the account string itself at some banks.

How Moldovan IBAN Validation Works

  1. Country code: First two characters must be MD.
  2. Length: Exactly 24 characters after removing spaces.
  3. Bank code format: Characters 5–6 must be uppercase letters.
  4. Account characters: Characters 7–24 are alphanumeric (digits and uppercase letters).
  5. MOD-97: Rearrange the first four characters to the end, convert letters to numbers (A=10…Z=35), compute modulo 97. Result must equal 1.

The ibanchecker.cash validator applies all five checks and decodes the bank code and account number for any Moldovan IBAN.

Moldova's Banking System

The National Bank of Moldova (NBM), Banca Națională a Moldovei, is headquartered in Chișinău and regulates approximately 11 licensed commercial banks. Moldova's banking sector experienced a severe crisis in 2014–2015 when approximately $1 billion (equivalent to 12% of GDP) was fraudulently extracted from three banks (Banca de Economii, Banca Sociala, and Unibank), triggering a major regulatory overhaul.

Key commercial banks include:

  • maib (Moldova-Agroindbank), the largest bank, with roots in agricultural lending and now serving retail and corporate clients
  • Moldindconbank, second-largest bank, with broad retail and SME presence
  • Victoriabank, part of the Banca Transilvania Group (Romania), the largest banking group in Romania
  • OTP Bank Moldova, formerly Mobiasbancă, subsidiary of OTP Group (Hungary)
  • Eximbank, subsidiary of the Intesa Sanpaolo Group (Italy)
  • ProCredit Bank Moldova, subsidiary of ProCredit Holding (Germany), focused on SMEs

SEPA Status and International Transfers

Moldova joined the SEPA schemes' geographical scope in 2025. The European Payments Council admitted Moldova on 6 March 2025, with an Operational Readiness Date of 5 October 2025. Moldovan payment service providers that have adhered can now send and receive SEPA Credit Transfers in euro, typically settling within one business day rather than a multi-day SWIFT wire. Moldova also holds EU candidate status (granted June 2022).

The Moldovan Leu (MDL) remains the domestic currency, so a payment made in MDL still routes internationally; SEPA applies to euro-denominated transfers. Adherence is rolled out institution by institution, so confirm the recipient bank's scheme participation before choosing between a SEPA transfer and a SWIFT wire.

Remittances and the Moldovan Economy

Remittances are critically important to Moldova's economy, consistently representing 12–16% of GDP, one of the highest remittance-to-GDP ratios in Europe. The largest remittance corridors are from Russia, Italy, Germany, France, and the UK. Many Moldovan residents hold euro-denominated accounts to receive transfers without currency conversion losses, and the use of IBANs for remittance routing has grown substantially since 2018.

Common Moldovan IBAN Mistakes

Confusing MD with DE or MK (North Macedonia)

MD (Moldova) and MK (North Macedonia) share the letter M. North Macedonia's MK IBANs are 19 characters; Moldovan IBANs are 24 characters. German IBANs (DE) are 22 characters. Length and the exact two-letter code are the definitive distinguishers.

Expecting All-Numeric BBAN

Moldovan IBANs have an alphabetic bank code (positions 5–6) and potentially letters in the account number. Systems that validate the BBAN as all-numeric will reject valid MD IBANs.

Assuming Moldova Is Outside SEPA

Since 5 October 2025 Moldova is part of the SEPA geographical scope, so many Moldovan banks can receive euro SEPA Credit Transfers. Confirm the recipient bank's scheme participation before defaulting to a SWIFT wire.
