The Chad IBAN is 27 characters long and follows the ISO 13616 standard administered by the Banque des Etats de l'Afrique Centrale (BEAC). Chad is a member of the Central African Economic and Monetary Community (CEMAC), which shares the Central African CFA franc (XAF) with Cameroon, the Central African Republic, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon. The IBAN structure is consistent across all BEAC-zone member countries. Chad is not a SEPA country; all international transfers use the SWIFT network.

Chad IBAN at a Glance

  • Country code: TD
  • Total length: 27 characters (always)
  • Format: TDkk bbbbb nnnnn aaaaaaaaaaa dd
  • BBAN length: 23 digits
  • Character types: 5-digit bank code + 5-digit branch code + 11-digit account number + 2-digit national check key (all numeric)
  • Currency: Central African CFA franc (XAF)

Chad IBAN Structure Explained

1. Country Code, TD (2 characters)

The ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code for Chad. Every Chadian IBAN begins with TD.

2. Check Digits, kk (2 digits)

Two decimal digits computed using the MOD-97 algorithm defined in ISO 7064. They detect transposition and single-digit entry errors before the payment is routed through the correspondent banking chain.

3. Bank Code, bbbbb (5 digits)

A 5-digit numeric code identifying the receiving bank within Chad. The BEAC assigns and maintains these codes for all licensed credit institutions operating within the CEMAC zone. Common bank codes for major Chadian institutions:

  • 60002, Societe Generale Tchad
  • 60003, Commercial Bank Tchad
  • 60006, Banque Agricole et Commerciale du Tchad (BACT)
  • 60008, Ecobank Chad

4. Branch Code, nnnnn (5 digits)

A 5-digit numeric code identifying the specific branch. This code must be copied exactly from the account holder's official bank documentation. Modifying or zero-padding independently of what the bank provides will produce an IBAN that fails the national check key validation.

5. Account Number, aaaaaaaaaaa (11 digits)

An 11-digit numeric account number, left-padded with zeros if the underlying account is shorter than 11 digits. This is the customer's individual account identifier within the branch.

6. National Check Key, dd (2 digits)

A 2-digit check key computed from the bank code, branch code, and account number using a modulo-97 domestic validation algorithm. This provides a second layer of error detection on top of the IBAN check digits. An IBAN that passes MOD-97 but has an incorrect national check key does not correspond to a valid Chadian account.

Chad IBAN Example Explained

TD89 6000 2000 0102 7109 1600 153
  • Country code: TD
  • Check digits: 89
  • Bank code: 60002 (Societe Generale Tchad)
  • Branch code: 00001
  • Account number: 02710916001
  • National check key: 53

How Chadian IBAN Validation Works

  1. Country code check: First two characters must be exactly TD.
  2. Length check: Total character count with spaces removed must be exactly 27.
  3. Character type check: All 23 BBAN characters must be digits. No letters appear in the Chadian BBAN.
  4. MOD-97 check: Move the first four characters (TD + check digits) to the end of the string, replace each letter with its numeric value (T=29, D=13), then divide by 97. A valid IBAN produces a remainder of 1.

The ibanchecker.cash validator performs all four checks instantly and displays the bank code, branch, and account breakdown for every valid Chadian IBAN.

Chad Is Not a SEPA Country

Chad is not a member of the Single Euro Payments Area. All international transfers to Chadian accounts route via the SWIFT correspondent banking network. Key implications:

  • Processing times of 2–5 business days depending on correspondent routing
  • Correspondent bank fees applied at each step of the transfer chain
  • The BIC/SWIFT code of the Chadian receiving bank is required alongside the IBAN
  • The Central African CFA franc (XAF) is pegged to the euro at a fixed rate of 655.957 XAF per EUR, the same rate as the West African CFA franc (XOF). This makes euro pricing predictable, though SWIFT fees still apply and SEPA clearing is not available.

Chad and the BEAC Banking Zone

The BEAC-zone IBAN structure is shared by all six CEMAC member countries: Cameroon (CM), Central African Republic (CF), Chad (TD), Republic of Congo (CG), Equatorial Guinea (GQ), and Gabon (GA). All six formats use the same 27-character structure with 5-digit bank and branch codes, an 11-digit account number, and a 2-digit national check key. The only structural difference between member country IBANs is the outer country code at positions 1–2. Confirming the correct country code is essential when processing payments to Central African destinations.

Finance teams handling payments to multiple Central African suppliers can validate Chadian IBANs together with IBANs from other BEAC-zone countries using the ibanchecker.cash bulk checker.

Common Chad IBAN Mistakes

Mixing Up BEAC-Zone Country Codes

TD (Chad), CM (Cameroon), GA (Gabon), CG (Republic of Congo), CF (Central African Republic), and GQ (Equatorial Guinea) all produce 27-character IBANs with identical BBAN structures. Using the wrong country code will send the payment to a bank in the wrong CEMAC country. Always confirm the outer country code with the account holder.

Missing National Check Key

The 2-digit national check key is a mandatory part of the Chadian IBAN. Systems that pattern match against a simpler format may truncate the last two digits, producing a 25-character IBAN that fails the length check. The national check key is not optional.

Wrong Character Types

The Chadian BBAN is entirely numeric. Systems that expect alphanumeric IBANs should not insert letters. Any non-digit character in positions 5–27 of a TD IBAN is a structural error.
